Flora Fauna Nusantara conducted a community service activity through the Birdwatching For Kids (BIWAKI) program at SDN Sucolor 2 Maesan, Bondowoso. The program was designed as an educational initiative to introduce biodiversity conservation to students from an early age using interactive and engaging learning methods.
Situated near the forest area managed by the Bondowoso Forest Management Unit (KPH Bondowoso), the school provides an ideal setting for environmental learning activities. Through the BIWAKI program, students were encouraged to recognize that forests are not only collections of trees, but also important habitats that support diverse bird species and maintain ecosystem balance.
The activity began with an educational session discussing bird diversity, habitat characteristics, bird behavior, and the importance of environmental conservation. Several bird species were introduced to the students, including the Sooty-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus aurigaster), commonly found around settlements, sunbirds (Cinnyris sp.) known for their role as pollinators, and the endangered Javan Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi), one of Indonesia’s iconic protected wildlife species.
Presentation of Material
In addition to classroom presentations, students also participated in direct birdwatching activities in the surrounding environment using binoculars and bird identification guides. This experience provided students with the opportunity to observe birds in their natural habitats while developing basic observation skills, environmental awareness, and scientific curiosity.
Bird watching in nature
Through this program, Flora Fauna Nusantara hopes to encourage students to become more familiar with local bird diversity and inspire a younger generation that is actively concerned with environmental conservation and biodiversity protection.
